Reciprocating Gas Compressor Piping and Structural Design

Project Scope

In September 2024, Biggs Design Engineering (BIGGS) completed the piping system and structural design of a Gas Compressor Module (GCM) for Intelligas (iGas), which was a containerised wellhead compressor for use in the coal seam gas industry. iGas is a longstanding customer for BIGGS and we are proud to have helped them design the GCM as part of a technology trial for one of Australia’s largest energy companies.

BIGGS completed the engineering design of the wellhead compressor piping system to ASME B31.3, pulsation dampeners to ISO 13631, pressure vessel design to AS1210, and structural skid design including dynamic simulation to mitigate the risk of vibration. We also managed the end user technical authority interface to achieve endorsement of the mechanical, piping, and structural designs for this trial.

BIGGS completed the following engineering design tasks to deliver this project:

Piping system design

  • Pipe stress analysis in Caesar II to ASME B31.3.
  • Pulsation suppression device calculations to ISO 13631 and API 618.
  • Acoustic Induced Vibration (AIV) and Flow Induced Vibration (FIV) screening calculations to Energy Institute guidelines.
  • Workshop facilitation for multidiscipline internal 3D model reviews.
  • Engineering and drafting reviews of all piping and structural drawings for fabrication.

Structural Design

  • Structural design of the compressor skid frame, container, and pipe supports.
  • Dynamic analysis of the GCM Package to ensure that the design complied with the compressor vendor’s vibration acceptance criteria.
